The changes put forth for a renewed Utah Drivers Licence.

I recently received a letter in the mailbox from the Utah Division of Licensing.

No, biggy. I knew I was coming up on my renewal date. Easy! Or so it once was. If you are in the belief that a clean driver's record would move you through the line., think again. When I received my letter, it stated that I would need to call and set up an appointment. I called and received a 7:00 a.m. appointment for the following morning. I and about fifty others.

I figured that since I had a perfect driving record, I could walk in and present my driver's license. They'd type a few things into the computer and see that all was great. No change of address. The name's the same. Instead, I take a number. And Wait.

My number is called and I walk up to the counter where they take my picture for my new card. Then punctured two holes in my old license. Then I'm asked if I had completed my registration when I arrived. My What? I've had a driver's license since I was 17 years old and moved to Utah. What Registration. My birth certificate is the same, my Social Security Number is the same and my standing as a legal citizen is again, the same. Nothing has changed.

As soon as I'm done at the kiosk with my registration, I take another ticket. I wait patiently for another fifteen minutes when my number is called. She checks the computer to make sure that I've correctly filled in all the questions on the registration. Then gives me an eye check. I promptly fail it and am given another chance, this time with my glasses on.

I'm asked for 36.00. I swipe my card through and she tells me that I should receive my new license in the mail between four and six weeks. I leave after only 45 minutes. I'm good for another 5 years.

Oh, and I am still the same, American born in Hammond Indiana, thank you very much.
